Notebook of naval shipwright apprentice C.E. Clews.

A naval shipbuilder's apprentice note and technical drawing book, circa 1918 compiled by C.E. Clews, Fourth Year Shipwright Apprentice, comprising 90 pages of notes with numerous diagrams for all aspects of battleship shipbuilding, with cross-section views and highlighted components. As well as hull design, the Fourth Year syllabus describes pumping, flooding and drainage arrangements, fuelling and coaling, machinery and ventilation, and the arrangement of anchors and cables. Different designs are examined, including how the primary method can be overridden if damaged or defective. This volume covers the last year of the First World War when warship design was trying to reflect lessons learnt from 4 years of fighting on an unprecedented scale.

Administrative / biographical background
