A handwritten and illustrated volume on naval terms entitled, 'A Naval Expositor', by Thomas Riley Blanckley.
Manuscript work by Thomas Riley Blanckley entitled ‘A Naval Expositor, Shewing and Explaining the Words and Terms of Art Belonging to the Parts, Qualities, and Proportions of Building, Rigging, Furnishing, & Fitting a Ship for Sea. ALSO All Species that are Received into the Magazines, on what Services they are Used and Issued for. TOGETHER WITH the Names off all the Inferior Officers belonging to a Ship, with an abridgment of their respective Dutys.'
The volume includes hand drawn illustrations of ships equipment in the margins and an index at the back. There is an inscription on the front fly leaf which reads, 'Huish, North and South Huish, Devonshire 1780'. The volume also bears what may be Thomas Riley Blanckley's signature.
This is a manuscript version of The Naval Expositor, the first edition of which was later published by Blanckley in 1750. This version contains most of the same content as the later published version with some exceptions.
