McGivering, John, Lieutenant, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, 1884-1971.

This sub-collection consists of a small number of items relating to John McGivering's service in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (RNVR) during the First World War. Administrative / biographical background
John (‘Jack’) McGivering was born in Bebington, Cheshire, in 1884. During the First World War he was an officer in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (RNVR), serving on minesweepers and patrol boats. He was promoted to temporary lieutenant in 1916 and his appointments included command of the motor launch ML 339. Towards the end of 1918 he was admitted to the Royal Naval Hospital at Haslar with influenza. He was demobilised in the following year and in civilian life worked as a manager for the Midland Bank in Oxford. His service record can be found under the reference ADM 337/120/636 at The National Archives.
