Six letters dated 1870-1888 to Edward Riddle from his brother-in-law Francis (Frank) Robert Lucas, an engineer with the Telegraph Construction & Maintenance Co. Ltd. The letters cover technical aspects of cable laying such as the loading of the cable ship and the mechanisms used for paying-out cable. They also discuss the laying of cables between Germany and Norway, Mozambique and Zanzibar, New Zealand, and the political issues with laying a cable to South Africa. Lucas also wrote describing the use of his patented grapnel for lifting and cutting cables.
