Journal of Samgarnebo Samuel Wilkes, HMS HECLA, during a voyage of discovery in the Polar Seas, January - September 1821

Journal of Samgarnebo Samuel Wilkes, armourer of HMS HECLA kept during voyages undertaken by HMS FURY and HMS HECLA from 1821 to 1823, commanded by Captain William Edward Parry and Captain George Francis Lyon in search of the Northwest Passage. The first volume begins with a detailed account of the processes involved in becoming part of the crew on the expedition including examination at Woolwich Arsenal and detailed descriptions of preparations for the voyage. This volume covers the voyage from the Thames to the Hudson Straits and Upper Savage Islands and includes descriptions of encounters between the crews and Inuit in the area.
