Journal of Samgarnebo Samuel Wilkes, HMS HECLA, during a voyage of discovery in the Polar Seas, Feb - July 1822

Journal of Samgarnebo Samuel Wilkes, armourer of HMS HECLA kept during voyages undertaken by HMS FURY and HMS HECLA from 1821 to 1823, commanded by Captain William Edward Parry and Captain George Francis Lyon in search of the Northwest Passage. The third volume covers the second half of the time spent at Winter Island from 5 February 1822 until their departure on 2 July 1822. The description of encounters with local Inuit from volume two are continued providing further detail on the crew's attempts to communicate and trade with them. This volume also includes accounts of theatrical performances, further exploration of the region, preparations for their departure from winter quarters, and the funerals of John Reid and William Souter of the FURY who died after periods of illness and James Pringle of the HECLA who fell from the mast head.
