Administrative / biographical background
Samgarnebo Samuel Wilkes was armourer of HMS HECLA. Wilkes had returned to England with the despatches of the land expedition commanded by Lieutenant Commander John Franklin shortly before Lord Melville asked him to join the Parry expedition. Wilkes's father was James Wilkes, gunmaker to the Board of Ordnance, which helped him prove his qualifications as armourer.
