Private journal kept by J Kite, Gunner in HMS MUTINE in the Pacific.
Private journal kept by J Kite, Gunner in HMS MUTINE in the Pacific, covering nearly his whole career from 1866 to 1902. At January 1869, a map of the Atlantic Ocean is pasted in, showing the route from Valparaiso to Portsmouth. He was paid off on 30 March 1869, and from 1870 to 1875 he is on the staff of HMS EXCELLENT, appointed Ammunition Instructor in 1872. In June 1875 he is suspended as Ammunition Instructor and joins HMS THUNDERER in November. He works on many other ships in his long career, and as the journal enters the 1890s he writes about the ships his sons are joining, and where they are headed. Throughout the journal several press cuttings are pasted in, (plus a few others, including whole publications, which were inserted loosely and have been put into a separate folder). Box includes another volume, a rough journal for January to December 1905. The entries are very domestic in nature, the writer is not at sea, but the handwriting indicates the same author as the other volume. One of the inserts from this rough journal is an HM Dockyard Schools geometry exam paper, May 1905.
