Notebook containing a diary kept by Andrew Crawford entitled 'A Trip to the Antipodes', covering the period 7 March to 10 August 1885. Crawford and his wife Jessie travelled from London to Sydney on the Aberdeen White Star Line iron sailing ship PATRIARCH (1869). Their return passage from Melbourne to London via the Suez Canal was on the Orient Line iron screw steamship CUZCO (1871). The diary provides a detailed account of events at sea, lists of saloon class passengers, and descriptions of places visited in Australia, including Sydney, Melbourne and Ballarat. It closes with a comparison between passenger facilities on sail and steam ships.

Administrative / biographical background
Crawford was born in Glasgow about 1849 and worked as an accountant for the Commercial Union Assurance Company. He married Jessie Hossack Loudoun in 1879 and then lived with his family in the Stoke Newington area of London. Later they moved to Brighton, where Crawford died in 1934. The diary of Andrew Crawford was published by the National Maritime Museum as ‘A Trip to the Antipodes’, edited by Stephen Riley, Maritime Monographs and Reports No 45, 1980.
