Administrative / biographical background
Moberly was born in Odessa, Russia on 13 September 1833. His father was a merchant there until the Crimean War when the family moved to London. Charles went to school in Dresden and, in 1849, entered the Applied Sciences Department of King’s College. He left the college in 1852 and began work for J. and G. Rennie of Blackfriars. During that time he was also employed as fourth engineer on a steamer. In 1856 he became engineer to the River Steamers Company of Cork and two years later was appointed inspector for the construction of 3 light draught steamers for the River Volga. Moberly took the steamers out to Russia in the period 1859-1860. He remained on the Volga as assistant to the chief engineer of the Volga Steam Navigation Company and as manager of their passenger steamers until the end of 1865 when he returned to London to take up the position of manager and subsequently a director of the Erith works of Easton, Amos and Anderson. In 1892 he retired from the company, but continued as a consulting engineer. He was elected a Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1881. In 1862 he had married Edith Emily Wylie of St Petersburg and had ten children. Moberly died at Blackheath on 3 September 1902.
