Jesse Garton was born in Billingshurst, Sussex in 1894. He served onboard HMS VIVID as a steward from 11 September for nine weeks. He served as an Engineer on one of the troopships which landed allied troops at Gallipoli in April 1915. He later served with the Merchant Navy, and was awarded the Mercantile Marine Ribbon and the British Medal Ribbon in 1922.
