Journal kept by Lieutenant Sherard Osborn on HMS COLLINGWOOD, 1848.

Journal kept on board HM ship COLLINGWOOD. The journal begins 30 March 1848 and ends July 7 1848. It features detailed descriptions of the places visited, including Chile, and an overland journey to Rio de Janeiro. One of the letters copied into the journal is signed 'Sherard Osborn'. Various other remarks throughout the diary, including the author's birthday and the ships he served on, all match the details on Lieutenant Sherard Osborn's service record and suggest he was indeed the author of the journal. At the time Osborn was a junior Lieutenant on HM ship COLLINGWOOD, the flagship of the Pacific Station (Admiral Sir George Seymour). Osborn went onto serve with distinction, including service in the Austin Artic expedition, the Crimean War and the Second Opium war. He retired a Rear Admiral in 1873 and died two years later. Sherard's Service record is available online at the National Archives as ADM 196/37/365 and ADM 196/1/473.
