Journal kept by Richard Relf, bandsman on HMS ROYAL ALBERT (1854), between 11 September 1854 and 28 August 1858. During this period the ROYAL ALBERT completed fitting-out at Sheerness and was then flagship in the Mediterranean Fleet, taking part in operations in the Black Sea during the Crimean War. The volume includes particulars of the ship, lists of bandsmen and principal officers, notes on routine duties, lists of punishments among ratings, notes on locations visited around the Mediterranean, various quotes and samples of verse.
