Administrative / biographical background
Edward Riddle (1788-1854) taught mathematics at the higher school of Greenwich Hospital between 1821 and 1851 and was a leading figure in nautical science in this period. His ‘Treatise on Navigation and Nautical Astronomy…’ first published in 1824 became a standard course of mathematics for students who were destined for sea service. On retirement, he was presented with a marble portrait bust by William Theed, now in the Devonport House mausoleum at Greenwich.
