Letters written by Thomas Merrick, Sergeant in the Royal Marines, to his family, dated 1806-1814
See item level records.
Administrative / biographical background
Merrick's letters indicate he was born in 1763 and begun his career at sea in 1799. The letters relate to the period of the later Napoleonic wars and describe being on board the MINOTAUR at the Battle of Trafalagar and the SCIPION at the blockade of Toulon. Early letters describe being on board the troopship HMS INFLEXIBLE before embarking on HMS ARDENT, on which Merrick spent several years whilst the vessel was on convoy duty, transporting merchant seamen between the Nore and Gothenburg. The letters contain personal anecdotes about life at sea, including an account of measures taken to prevent the spread of an un-named disease aboard HMS ARDENT.
