Boultbee entered into the Navy on 15 September 1904. He served in the INVICIBLE, ACHILLES and SHANNON between 18 November 1901 to 3 May 1911. He was promoted to sub-lieutenant on 15 September 1912 and served in the acheron class destroyer ATTACK between 1912 and 1914. The ATTACK took part in the Battle of Heligoland Bight, 28 August 1914, Dogger Bank, 24 January 1915 and in the sinking of the U-12 and the Battle of Jutland. Boultbee was promoted lieutenant on 15 September 1914 and served in the COLOSSUS between 1914 and 1915. He later served in the COMMONWEALTH between 1915 and 1917 which served in the Grand Fleet until being transferred in 1916 to the Nore Command. He served in the NEPTUNE between 19 September 1917 and 29 January 1919 and in the CARDIFF between 30 January 1920 and 15 December 1920. He was promoted to lieutenant-commander on 15 September 1922 and commander on 31 December 1927. He was placed on the retired list as captain in 1942.
