Administrative / biographical background
George Stanford MacIlwaine entered into the Navy in 1860 as a cadet in the BRITANNIA. He first served in the PALLAS, a screw corvett. Specialising in gunnery, he joined HMS EXCELLENT, a gunnery schoolship, in 1872. In 1875 he became gunnery officer in the UNDAUNTED, the Flagship of the East Indies Fleet. He was appointed staff officer in the CAMBRIDGE, a gunnery schoolship at Devonport of which he became first lieutenant in 1878. In 1882 he received command of the COCKATRICE, a paddlewheel composite gunboat stationed on the Danube. He was appointed inspecting officer of the Coastguard at Yarmouth in 1884 until retirement from the Navy in 1892, we the rank of captain. He later served as inspector under the Board of Agriculture & Fisheries. During the First World War he served in special Coastal Squadron composed of merchant vessels converted into dummy battleships. He was also involved in research as to possible advantage of building ships with corrugated sides. William Stanford MacIlwaine entered into the Navy in 1905 in the DARTMOUTH training establishment. He was chosen for duty with the French officers when the President of the French Republic visited this country in 1913. During the First World War he served in destroyers and the monitor GORGON. He completed a first class ships course in 1919 but was found to have defective eyesight and was invalided out of the service. He then spent a short time in the oil industry at Hull, then taught in a preparatory school. In 1924 he joined the staff at the Nautical College, Pangbourne, to teach navigation, with great success. He was appointed executive officer at Pangbourne in 1940 whilst continuing to teach navigation.
