A collection of items relating to before and after World War One including a photograph album showing shipboard life during the First World War at sea, including his commissions for HMS GLORY, HECTOR (balloon ship), and RESOLUTION (1914 - 1919). Subjects include Halifax, Malta, naval airship station at Mudros, the Dardenelles and Anzac Cove, the initial advance of the light cruisers at Jutland and the scuttling of the German High Seas Fleet. Also included are family and home photographs taken while on leave, chronologically interwoven between commissions. Midshipman's Journal kept by Rayne, HMS REVENGE (September 1897 to September 1899). Most are issued by Captain WW Godfrey, RMLI, HMS TRIAD. Navigating Officer's Workbook: Journal kept by Geoffrey Rayne on HMS HECTOR (Mediterranean, between September 1915 and June 1916); HMS HERCULES, Grand Fleet (between June 1915 and January 1917) and HMS RESOLUTION Grand Fleet (January 1917). Rayne's personal war diary written between 27 September 1915 and 1 December 1918, including naval signals (telegrams) and press cuttings following the progress of the conflict.

Rayne joined the Royal Navy as a midshipman on HMS REVENGE in 1897, having spent time aboard the training ship BRITANNIA. He became a lieutenant in June 1903, a lieutenant-commander in June 1911 and a full commander in June 1916. He served in Halifax, the naval airship station at Muchos (where he commanded the balloon ship HMS HECTOR), and during the Dardanelles campaign. He was appointed to HMS HERCULES just after the Battle of Jutland and then in 1917 to HMS RESOLUTION, both attached to the Grand Fleet. He retired in 1927, but returned as a consular shipping adviser in Sweden during WWII. Service record available online at The National Archives: ADM/196/46.
