Administrative / biographical background
Kittoe entered into the Navy as a midshipman in the BELLONA in 1780 and the STANDARD both on the Channel Station until the peace of 1783. From then until 1786 he served in the GRAMPUS on the coast of Africa. He then served in the scout sloop TRUSTY; later serving in the West Indies in the ROYAL GEORGE, flagship of Sir Alexander Hood. He was promoted on 26 February 1794 to lieutenant and joined the SATURN; then later in the frigate HEBE, under Captain Alexander Hood and in June 1796, became acting commander of the PELICAN on the Leeward Islands Station. The PELICAN formed part of the unsuccessful attack on Porto Rico in April 1797. On 13 September 1797, in command of the BITTERN he engaged and captured L'AGREABLE and on 8 September 1798 captured the privateer LE DIX AOUT. In 1803, he was appointed acting Captain of the frigate LA MINERVE and in May 1804 he took command of L'ARGUS sloop and then the SABRINA in October 1806 which he commanded during the Walcheren expedition in 1809. He was appointed to post-captain on 4 January 1810 and captained the MILFORD in July of that year; which was the flag-ship of Sir Richard. G. Keats. Kittoe served at Cadiz during its defence and was later appointed to the Mediterranean Station in the HIBERNIA. His last appointment was received on 20 December 1814, being assigned captain to the frigate ASTREA on the coast of France. He died at Shoulden in Kent in 1823.
