Log book covering time served aboard HMS RALIEGH, HMS SANDFLY, HMS EMERALD, HMS DANAE, HMS ACHILLES and HMS SAPPHIRE. The first half contains handwritten entries of bearings, weather details, etc, while the second half contains diary entries. Includes entries in October 1880 concerning the murder by islanders of Lieutenant Bower of HMS SANDFLY plus five other crew while surveying ashore in the Solomon Islands. Bradford was left in command of the SANDFLY and his actions in retrieving the bodies of his comrades and the burning of the local village earned him a special promotion to Lieutenant.
