Administrative / biographical background
SS CALIFORNIAN was a British Leyland Line steamship. She is thought to be the only ship to see the TITANIC, or at least her rockets, during the sinking, but despite being the closest ship in the area, the crew, under Captain Stanley Lord, took no action to assist. She was sunk in 1915, in the Eastern Mediterranean, where she was serving as a transport ship.
