Letter from James Whitworth to his wife, 27 September 1812.
James Whitworth to his wife, HMS PORTIA, Yarmouth Roads 27 Sept 1812. Have just returned with dispatches from Gothenburg, having been released from irons to work the ship. Submits to go through the jury trial(?) being almost careless of the result. His relatives have petitioned the captain on his behalf, but because he is implicated with others he must stand with them. The mayor of Grimsby has organised a petition on his behalf, having visited in prison. They are sailing to Sheerness, where she may be able to visit him.
