The papers consist of two diaries, 1914 to 1915, memoranda on medical procedure in the First World War and letters written to him while at sea from his family.

After qualifying at Cambridge, Heald served in the Navy as a Temporary Surgeon, 1914 to 1915. He was in the Rohilla, hospital ship, which was wrecked in 1914, and then the Conqueror. He was subsequently Principal Medical Officer, R.A.F., Middle East, and Medical Adviser, Department of Civil Aviation, Air Ministry. Dr Heald was Consulting Physician to the Royal Free Hospital and Consulting Physician, Rheumatic Diseases at the Middlesex Hospital.
