Nares, John Dodd, Vice-Admiral, 1877-1957.

The papers were presented by the Hydrographic Department in 1969. They consist of two logs, 1894 to 1897. and one work book, 1928 to 1932.

Administrative / biographical background
John Dodd Nares, son of Sir George Strong Nares (q.v.), was a midshipman in the Crescent, Rapid and Orlando, Australian Station, between 1894 and 1897. He became a lieutenant in 1900, commander in 1913 and captain in 1919, serving in numerous survey ships including the Iroquois, which he commanded in 1928 on the China Station. From 1924 to 1928, 1930 to 1931 and 1940 to 1945, he was Assistant Hydrographer and Naval Assistant to the Hydrographer. In 1952 he was made Director of the International Hydrographic Bureau at Monaco.
