The papers consist of collections of signals relating to the Battle Jutland and to the surrender of the German High Seas Fleet in 1918; a log, 1936 to 1938; signals, 1939 to 1942; papers and signals relating to HMS DELHI, 1942 to 1944, and to the reoccupation of Malaya, 1945, and Peachey's papers as Commodore, 1947 to 1948.
Administrative / biographical background
Peachey entered the Navy in 1914. He went to sea as a midshipman on the battleship HMS KING GEORGE V (1911) in 1915 and was present at the Battle of Jutland in the following year. He joined the battleship HMS PRINCESS ROYAL (1911) in 1917 and became acting flag-lieutenant to Vice-Admiral Sir John M. de Robeck in 1918. Peachey was promoted to lieutenant in 1918 and served in China and the Mediterranean before becoming a lieutenant-commander in 1927. He had several seagoing appointments before being promoted to commander in 1933 and then spending some time at the Admiralty. Between 1936 and 1938 he was executive officer on the battleship HMS ROYAL OAK (1914), flagship of Rear-Admiral Lachlan D.I. Mackinnon, in command of the Second Battle Squadron. He was promoted to captain in 1940 and his commands included the armed merchant cruiser HMS QUEEN OF BERMUDA (requisitioned 1939) in 1941, the light cruiser HMS DELHI (1918) in the Mediterranean, between 1941 and 1943, and the light cruiser HMS ENTERPRISE (1919) in 1944. For his services during the Second World War he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) and made Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). From 1947 to 1948 he was Commodore, Palestine and Levant. He retired in 1950 and died in London in 1967.
