The collection consists of logs, 1801 to 1804, 1812 to 1815; letter and order books and ship's general orders, 1812 to 1815.
Administrative / biographical background
Roberts' name was entered in ships' books from 1794 onwards, but he apparently served first in HMS DREADNOUGHT (1801) in the Mediterranean from 1801 to 1804. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1805 and served in several ships before being appointed to command the brig-sloop HMS MEROPE (1808) on the east coast of Spain in 1812. From 1814 to 1815 he was in the sloop HMS PYLADES (1794) on the North American Station. He was promoted to captain in 1815 but had no further service. He retired in 1846 and rose to admiral on the retired list. Roberts took the surname of Gawen in 1851 for family reasons.
