Administrative / biographical background
George Prideaux Brabant Naish was the eldest son of a keen amateur maritime archaeologist, the Reverend Francis Clement Prideaux Naish (1881-1961). He was educated at St Edward's School, Oxford, and at Southampton University. He was first employed at the National Maritime Museum in 1935, soon after it was established. He joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (RNVR) in 1940, transferring on demobilisation to the Royal Naval Reserve (RNR), in which he became a lieutenant-commander. Naish returned to his role as an assistant director at the Museum in 1947. He attained the post of keeper in 1969, following the retirement of Commander William E. May, and in 1971 became historical consultant to the director, shortly before retiring. Naish wrote and edited a good number of books on nautical subjects, among which were volumes for the Navy Records Society. He was honorary secretary to the Society for Nautical Research for a period of thirty years, and also president of the Council for Nautical Archaeology. He died at Greenwich in 1977.
