Shipton, James Maurice, Captain, 1789-1886.

This sub-collection consists of a series of ten logbooks kept by Shipton as a midshipman and mate between 1803 and 1809.

Administrative / biographical background
Shipton was the second son of the Rev. Dr. John Shipton, rector of Portishead. He was born at Bristol in 1789 and entered the Navy in 1803. As a midshipman and mate between 1803 and 1809 he served on HMS THUNDERER (1783), HMS HIBERNIA (1804), HMS PRINCE OF WALES (1794) and HMS PENELOPE (1798), mainly engaged on blockade duty off Ferrol, Brest and Corunna. He was also present at the taking of the fort at Trinité harbour on the island of Martinique in 1804. After obtaining a commission as a lieutenant in 1810 Shipton spent much time on the Halifax station. He was serving on the brig HMS CURLEW (1812) when she captured the American ship VOLANTE in 1813. Shipton was on half pay from 1815, was promoted to the rank of commander in 1850, and died at Cheltenham in 1886. He was buried in the crypt of Christ Church (St. Mary de Crypt Church) in Gloucester.
