Captain William Henry Webb: correspondence and memorials of services. Webb took part in the Niger Expedition, 1840-1842, was in the Coastguard Service, 1850-57, and was Deputy Shipping Master at the Sailor's Home, Well Street, 1859, (formerly BGY/7/3). Related Material ADL/Q/76.
Administrative / biographical background
Webb was born at Ledbury circa 1814 and entered the Royal Naval College at Portsmouth in 1827. He served as a college volunteer and midshipman on the sloop HMS LIGHTNING later LARNE (1829), between 1829 and 1836. He served as mate on the schooner HMS COCKATRICE (1832) between 1836 and 1840. In the period 1850-1857 he served as an inspecting commander in the Coast Guard. He died at Berrow in Worcestershire in 1894. His service record giving his date of birth as 23 April 1813 can be found under the references ADM 196/16/59 and ADM 196/37/1369 at TNA.
