Stopford family papers

The papers of Admiral Sir Robert Stopford (1768-1847) numbered STO/1-14 cover his naval career in outline and for some periods there is a considerable amount of detail. The most notable collections are a series of letters from the Duke of Clarence as Lord High Admiral, 1827-1828; and two volumes of letters from Lord Ponsonby, ambassador in Constantinople, and Lord Minto, first lord of the Admiralty, while Stopford was commander-in-chief in the Mediterranean, 1837-1841. There are also several letters of official notes of thanks to Stopford for his naval services, both general and personal.

The papers of Admiral Robert Fanshawe Stopford (1811-1891) numbered STO/101-109 consist of loose papers mounted in a volume, relating mainly to his service on HMS TALBOT and HMS ASIA, with official service documents and two rolled charts. An additional volume relates to his time as a midshipman, featuring sailing and wind calculations, together with observations on forts in the Dardanelles and Sevastopol.

The papers of Admiral Sir Montagu Stopford (1798-1864) numbered STO/201-202 consist of memoranda issued to the fleet in the Crimea, 1854, records of arrivals and sailings of ships at Malta, 1855 to 1856, and the commission appointing Stopford admiral-superintendent of Malta Dockyard.

The papers of Commander Robert Neville Stopford (1888-1949) numbered STO/301-302 include midshipman's journals kept while he was in the Mediterranean between 1905 and 1908.
