Stopford, Robert Neville, Commander, 1888-1949.

Two midshipman's log books kept while Robert Neville Stopford was in the Mediterranean between 1905 and 1908. The first volume covers his time on HMS BARFLEUR and HMS FORMIDABLE. The second volume covers his time aboard HMS HINDUSTAN and HMS BERWICK.

Administrative / biographical background
Robert Neville Stopford was the son of Rear-Admiral Robert Wilbraham Stopford (1844-1911). He was born in Butleigh, Somerset, in 1888. He became a cadet on HMS BRITANNIA at Dartmouth in 1903 and went to sea as a midshipman on the battleship HMS FORMIDABLE in the Mediterranean in 1905. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 1910. In the period 1913-1924 he had a series of commands in the Submarine Service. He was placed on the retired list with the rank of commander in 1929.
