Log book of HMS MALABAR and HMS SULTAN 1884-1885, kept by Ernest Francis de Chair.

The entries for the iron screw troopship HMS MALABAR (1866) are from 4 April to 9 April 1884 and record a journey between Portsmouth and Gibraltar.

The log for the battleship HMS SULTAN (1870) begins on 15 April 1884 while the vessel is in Malta before embarking on a voyage to the Mediterranean and back. The log is illustrated throughout with watercolour drawings, hand drawn charts and technical diagrams. There are illustrations of specific parts of the ship; the stern tube for the propeller shaft, aft water tank room and cross section of armour plate at main deck level. Includes diagram of the mechanism for raising the screw propeller out of the water, to reduce drag when the ship was under sail alone. Diagrams of tactical exercises, showing the courses of the SULTAN and her squadron mates on 22nd October 1884. The log also contains descriptions and diagrams of engine evolutions. At the back of the volume are several recreational drawings of topical events.
