Log book of HMS CLEOPATRA, Flying Squadron, 1882-1883, and HMS ORONTES, HMS MALATA and HMS DUKE OF WELLINGTON, kept by Ernest Francis de Chair.

The entries for the screw corvette HMS CLEOPATRA (1878) are 15 December 1881 to 11 December 1883. Ports of call include Singapore, Colombo, Japan and China. The log is illustrated throughout with watercolour drawings, hand drawn charts and technical diagrams. Includes plans of the vessel's fore compartment, auxiliary rudder and boilers. There is a diagram of a Nordenfelt gun.

The entries for the iron screw troopship HMS ORONTES (1862) begin on 12 December 1883. De Chair was on board for three months travelling from Hong Kong to Singapore, Zanitou, Aden and Port Said. The entries for the iron screw troopship HMS MALABAR (1866) begin on 12 February 1884 at Port Said and record a voyage to Malta before returning to Portsmouth at the end of February. The receiving ship at Portsmouth was HMS DUKE OF WELLINGTON (1852) and the entries begin 27 February 1884 and finish on 29 March 1884.

There appears to be some errors in regards to the date with 1885 being written followed by 1884 for some of the later entries.

There are six loose leaves at the back of the log. Two are log entries and the others are watercolours.
