Letter written by Merrick, HMS ALLART, to his nephew, 30 November 1807.

The letter was written while on board HMS ALLART, a Dano-Norwegian vessel captured by the British at the Second Battle of Copenhagen.

The letter contains a personal anecdote on the difficulty of suffering health problems while at sea, which has prevented Merrick from attaining promotion.

An incident is recounted in which an unfair punishment meted out by a drunk superior, at midnight and during bad weather, jeopardises the safety of the crew.

The letter concludes with the expression of intention to send the medal received for the victory at Trafalgar for his nephew's new child. Description of the inscription of the medal is included.
