Letter written by Merrick, HMS ARDENT, to his nephew, 1 January 1809.

The disease mentioned in the previous letter has returned and is affecting many on board resulting in them being sent to the hospital. Public houses and shops in Leith and Edinburgh are refusing to admit seamen or marines from HMS ARDENT in fear of the disease.

The attempt to stop the spread of the disease is described in detail.
