Manuscript Journal of George Orton on board HMS PLYMOUTH, the Commander being Sir John Narbrough, from 1 May 1677 to 4 October 1678.
The journal opens with the ship at Portsmouth, then they sail to Tangiers, cruise the Barbary coast, then sail to Alicante, Algiers, Sardinia, Livorno and Zante and back by the same route to Tangiers from where they continued to cruise the Barbary coast. Each day has the appropriate planetary sign in the inner margin and opens with the state and direction of the wind and the weather. Marginal notes highlight the major events.
