Administrative / biographical background
Captain Henry Victor Hudson was born in 1883 in Kent. He started his career in the Royal Navy as a cadet on the BRITANNIA in 1898, reaching the rank of commander in 1920, and was appointed captain in 1930. He was awarded an O.B.E. in 1919. Captain Hudson also gained a Master's certificate in 1920 and when he retired from the Royal Navy he became a yachtsman. Between 1935 and 1940 he skippered the RONDA on a voyage from Gibraltar to Townsville in Australia. The RONDA was wrecked at Ross Place in Townsville in 1940. Hudson returned to naval service during part of World War II and commanded the Australian passenger liner Westralla as an armed merchantman for three years. He then skippered the PALMOSA between 1948 and 1954 on a voyage from Europe to Townsville in Australia. In an Australian newspaper interview Hudson stated that his yacht was like a mobile home and said ‘I follow the sun and go where the spirit moves me.’
