Anna of Denmark and Henrietta Maria : virgins, witches, and Catholic queens /Susan Dunn-Hensley.
"This book examines how early Stuart queens navigated their roles as political players and artistic patrons in a culture deeply conflicted about the legitimacy of female authority. Anna of Denmark and Henrietta Maria both employed powerful female archetypes such as Amazons and the Virgin Mary in court performances. Susan Dunn-Hensley analyzes how darker images of usurping, contaminating women, epitomized by the witch, often merged with these celebratory depictions. By tracing these competing representations through the Jacobean and Caroline periods, Dunn-Hensley peels back layers of misogyny from historical scholarship and points to rich new lines of inquiry. Few have written about Anna's religious beliefs, and comparing her Catholicism with Henrietta Maria's illuminates the ways in which both women were politically subversive. This book offers an important corrective to centuries of negative representation, and contributes to a fuller understanding of the role of queenship in the English Civil War and the fall of the Stuart monarchy."--Provided by the publisher.

Henrietta Maria : conspirator, warrior, phoenix queen /Leanda de Lisle.
"Henrietta Maria, Charles I's queen, is the most reviled consort to have worn the crown of Britain's three kingdoms. Condemned as that 'Popish brat of France', a 'notorious whore' and traitor, she remains in popular memory the wife who wore the breeches and turned her husband Catholic - so causing a civil war - and a cruel and bigoted mother. Leanda de Lisle's White King was hailed as 'the definitive modern biography about Charles I' (Observer). Here she considers Henrietta Maria's point of view, unpicking the myths to reveal a very different queen. We meet a new bride who enjoyed annoying her uptight husband, a leader of fashion in clothes and cultural matters, an innovative builder and gardener and an advocate of the female voice in public affairs. No bigot, her closest friends included 'Puritans' as well as Catholics, and she led the anti-Spanish faction at court linked to the Protestant cause in the Thirty Years' War. When civil war came, the strategic planning and fundraising of his 'She Generalissimo' proved crucial to Charles's campaign. The story takes us to courts across Europe, and looks at the fate of Henrietta Maria's mother and sisters, who also faced civil wars. Her estrangement from her son Henry is explained, and the image of the Restoration queen as an irrelevant crone is replaced with Henrietta Maria as an influential 'phoenix queen', presiding over a court with 'more mirth' even than that of the Merry Monarch, Charles II"--Provided by the publisher.

The court, the Atlantic and the city : Sir Walter Ralegh v. William Sanderson /by Michael Franks.
An account of the relationship between Sir Walter Ralegh, courtier and explorer, and his treasurer William Sanderson, a rich merchant from the City of London. They became acquainted when Sanderson married Ralegh's niece in 1584, quickly becoming friends. Sanderson funded Ralegh's activities including: the building of Sherborne Castle, the establishment of a colony in Roanoke, as well as Ralegh's expensive lifestyle. Both men played a significant role in developing England's overseas empire, through the use of maritime power. They were involved in improving the use of navigational equipment and ship design. The pair fell out over the financing of Ralegh's trip to find El Dorado in 1595. Ralegh owed Sanderson a large sum of money and never paid him for his role as his treasurer. The two families remained on good terms however, and Sanderson visited Ralegh the night before his execution in 1618. Their 34-year relationship has never before been explored in much detail and Michael Frank's work endeavours to provide an in-depth account of it.

Treasure, treason and the tower : El Dorado and the murder of Sir Walter Raleigh /Paul R. Sellin.
Paul R Sellin, Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of California, discovers Dutch, French and Latin papers in Swedish archives which include 'directions' to the 'lost' gold mine which Sir Walter Raleigh claimed to have discovered whilst travelling up the Orinoco River during the reign of Elizabeth I. During the reign of her successor, James I, Raleigh was charged with treason and imprisoned in the Tower of London. He was released and allowed to mount a second expedition up the Orinoco River, which ended in an attack at a Spanish outpost, now Venezuela, where his son was killed. On returning to England, Raleigh was accused of lying about the mine and of attempting to start a war between Spain and England. He was beheaded in 1618. Sellin believes that the correspondence discovered in Sweden shows that the Duke of Buckingham and the King of Sweden may have colluded to find the gold that Raleigh claimed to have discovered and therefore that the charges of treason were false. Sellin records his own expedition based on Raleigh's 'Discoverie of Guiana', believes he finds the site of the mine and that Raleigh's subsequent execution was unjust. The book contains photographs of the trip and illustrated maps.
