Albert medals awarded to Royal Marines : with particular reference to Marine Albert Streams AM (served 1921-1943). /by Derek Oakley
"The Albert medal was instituted in 1866 and was awarded for supreme gallantry not in the face of the enemy. In 1940, when King George VI introduced the George Cross and George Medal it ceased to be awarded. In 1971 surviving holders of the Albert Medal were allowed to exchange their medals for the George Cross. The first Albert Medal was awarded in 1878 and the last in 1939. [...] The heart of this publication is the story of Marine Albert Streams, who served from 1921 until he was killed on the beaches of Sicily in 1943 when he was MOA to the CO of 41 RM Commando. [...] the King personally presented him with his Albert Medal which he won when the Marines turret of HMS Devonshire blew up in 1929."-- Provided by the publisher. This publication also covers five other medallists and two other associated awards.

The first and second Arctic medals (1818-1876) : with biographies of their recipients /by Rear Admiral John A.L. Myres
"In this new volume, The First and Second Arctic Medals (1818 to 1876), John Myres has concentrated entirely on the 19th Century and, following the same general format as the earlier volumes, has further expanded it to explore the lives and careers of the almost 2500 men who had been awarded the First Arctic Medal (with some 1500 medals being issued), as well as the 155 men who were awarded the Second Arctic Medal. This was because it had dawned on him that much more justice should have been done to all the intrepid souls who had explored, searched and sometimes died in the Arctic in the 19th Century. Whilst the 'mini-bios' of some of the more senior officers were reasonably detailed, many of the sailors and marines had often only been described in a single (usual short) sentence, and he felt that they deserved that more about their lives and careers should be recorded, not least because this would allow descendants, researchers and collectors, a fuller framework upon which to build if they wished to explore them further. As well as tracing the background and career of each man, and sometimes his death, this new volume also includes, wherever possible, a record of all the other medals and awards that he received in addition to his Arctic Medal. As the middle of the 19th Century involved much naval activity and conflict, many of the Arctic Medallists acquired a number of other campaign medals, as well as Long Service and Good Conduct Medals, and this record will be useful to collectors and descendants who possess these and can now link them to the men 's service in the Arctic."--Provided by the publisher

Hard at work : the diary of Leonard Wyon 1853-1867 /Philip Attwood.
Leonard Wyon (1826-1891), as modeller and engraver to the Royal Mint, dominated coin and medal production in Britain throughout much of the second half of the nineteenth century. His commisions included the famous 'bun' penny of Queen Victoria, coins destined for India, Australia and Canada, campaign and private medals as well as the prize medal for the 1862 International Exhibition. Primarily aimed at numismatists, this diary throws light on some of his most famous designs and places Wyon in the context of his times with details of his family life, his wealth and status, his religious and moral beliefs and his tastes in reading and the arts. Appendices trace the commissioning and production processes of his work. The diary entries are annotated and the text is illustrated with photographs of his many designs.

A saviour of souls William and Kate Johnston : the story of a legendary prototype lifeboat and her impact on British lifeboat design /Nicholas Leach.
"William and Kate Johnson is a remarkable vessel. This 60ft prototype lifeboat, which was built in 1923, incorporated features that became standard in British motor lifeboats throughout the 20th century. Designed by James Barnett, she represented a leap forward in lifeboat design. Twin engines and a shelter for survivors and crew were but two of her innovative features. She served at New Brighton from 1923 to 1950 without a break, saved 248 lives, was involved in RNLI Silver and Bronze medal-winning rescues, and her crew also gained the French Gold medal. This book traces the origins of the 60ft Barnett lifeboats. It looks at the histories of the prototype of the class and her three sister vessels in Aberdeen, Plymouth and Padstow, and shows the importance of William anda Kate Johnson in the development of the motor lifeboat. Her place in lifeboat history is now being recognised and she is on the National Register of Historic Vessels."--From back cover.

The lifeboat service in Ireland : station by station /Nicholas Leach.
"After almost fifty hours at sea, in the worst conditions imaginable, the Ballycotton lifeboat Mary Stanford brought the rescued survivors from the Daunt Rock lightvessel to shore, ending one of the most dramatic and outstanding rescues in the history of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. For this courageous and stamina snapping rescue, the Gold Medal was awarded to Coxswain Patrick Sliney with Silver and Bronze medals going to the rest of the crew. The famous Daunt Rock rescue is just one of the many award-winning services performed by Ireland's lifeboat men and women, whose courage, dedication to duty and willingness to help seafarers in distress has characterised the service since the early years of the nineteenth century. Today, the lifeboat service in Ireland is the responsibility of the RNLI, which operates forty-five lifeboat stations, and this volume contains details of every one, with information about their history, rescues and current lifeboats."--Provided by the publisher.

The games : Britain's olympic and paralympic journey to London 2012 /Brendan Gallagher.
"The Games traces Britain's great Olympic and Paralympic past through powerful narrative, striking anecdotes and over 250 compelling original images. It captures the individual atmosphere of past Games across the world, from 1930s Berlin to 1980s Moscow, Sydney in the Millennium to Beijing's Birds Nest in 2008, and explores the explosion of interest in the Paralympic Games. London's previous roles as host, rescuing the Games in 1904 after Vesuvius erupted and battling with postwar austerity in 1948, are considered both as contemporaries saw them and from a historical perspective, as are individual stories of British medal winners. The final chapter focuses upon the preparations for London 2012 events, from individual athletes to the radical keynotes of sustainability and regeneration, and shows how London 2012 will both strengthen and refresh Britain's historic Olympic ties."--From publisher.
