American passengers arrival records : a guide to the records of immigrants arriving at American ports by sail and steam
"Lured by opportunity or driven by necessity, millions of people made their way to America in the most determined and sustained migration the world has ever known. Initially they left traces of their immigration in scattered records and documents; later, their arrival in this country was documented so minutely that the records resulting from this documentation are among the largest, the most continuous, and the most uniform in the nation's archives. [...] In sheer volume these records are intimading, their contents unwieldy and difficult to use. The object of this book is to cut them down to size, to make them accessible, and to help wring information from them. Thus it examines the records in their historical and legal framework, and it explains what they contain, where they can be found, and how they can be used. In effect, it is a road map through the mass of records and archival resources that document the arrival of immigrants in America from the time of the earliest settlements to the passage of the Quota Acts three centuries later."--Provided by the publisher.

Radio man : Marconi Sahib /Mahrie Locket.
"Radio Man consists of never before published stories and pictures about the British Merchant Marine seen through the eyes of Ship's Radio Officer Alan Patterson. His captivating diaries offer rare 1st- person insight to the harrowing state of the Pacific theatre at the time, taking us from 1938 through to the end of the war. Here is a glimpse of a typical day in Alan's life as the Ship's Radio Man. "We saw no patrol ships at all while at sea, the poor old Merchant Service had to just plug along on its own with no protection and no guns. However, the Navy had put a gun platform on our stern before we left, so we built an imitation of a gun with a mast spar and an empty oil drum. We hoped that if a sub saw it at a distance it might possibly mistake it for a gun and so prevent it surfacing and shelling us. I couldn't help thinking how futile and rather pathetic this was but still while there is life there is hope. We arrived in Calcutta safely-- thanks to no one but ourselves. Shortly after this trip we were given guns and taught how to use them!" Alan and his crew managed to escape submarine wolf packs several times. On one especially dangerous run near India, he discovered that the fine bunch of courageous men from the ship he had just left had been blown to bits while returning to India on a British India Vessel loaded with munitions. Alan writes about more than just the war however. His diary is also a wealth of historical sidebars and anecdotal observations covering both India and Burma as World War II smouldered ominously in the closing distance. Here is one of those obscure front-row seats which imparts a genuine sense of immediacy to the turbulence of the the times. One can almost sense the destruction and devastation caused by the bombing and the plundering as Alan's eye-witness accounts unfold before you. Radio Man is a fascinating read and it will keep you intrigued until the very end."--Provided by the publisher.

Paradise in chains : the Bounty Mutiny and the founding of Australia /Diana Preston.
"Celebrated historian Diana Preston presents betrayals, escapes, and survival at sea in her account of the mutiny of the Bounty and the flight of convicts from the Australian penal colony. The story of the mutiny of the Bounty and William Bligh and his men's survival on the open ocean for 48 days and 3,618 miles has become the stuff of legend. But few realize that Bligh's escape across the seas was not the only open-boat journey in that era of British exploration and colonization. Indeed, 9 convicts from the Australian penal colony, led by Mary Bryant, also traveled 3,250 miles across the open ocean and some uncharted seas to land at the same port Bligh had reached only months before. In this meticulously researched dual narrative of survival, acclaimed historian Diana Preston provides the background and context to explain the thrilling open-boat voyages each party survived and the Pacific Island nations each encountered on their journey to safety. Through this deep-dive, readers come to understand the Pacific Islands as they were and as they were perceived, and how these seemingly utopian lands became a place where mutineers, convicts, and eventually the natives themselves, were chained"--Provided by publisher.

Tides of fortune : memoirs of Chang Yung-Fa /with a foreword by Margaret Thatcher.
Chang Yung-Fa, known best as the leader of the Evergreen shipping company, here details his life story. Born in Taiwan, he started as a hatch-keeper for a Japanese shipping line, rising up the ranks to captain. He left to start Evergreen Marine Corporation in 1968, and fought freight conferences for freedom of shipping routes. Evergreen grew into the largest shipping company in the world, and Chang eventually went on to establish EVA Air, Taiwan's first private international airline. This edition contains a foreward by Margaret Thatcher.

RMS Titanic : Made in the Midlands
"The story of the ill-fated liner Titanic is one that has been told and retold countless times ? it is hard to imagine that there could be any new stories or twists to the tale. Yet Titanic's strong connection with the Midlands is one such story that is not so well known. The ship may have been built in Belfast, registered in Liverpool and sailed from Southampton, but over 70 per cent of her interiors came from the Midlands. This pivotal piece of research from Titanic expert Andrew P.B. Lound explores the role played by the people and the varied industries of the Black Country in the life of the most famous ship in the world."--Provided by the publisher.

Torch : North Africa and the Allied path to victory /Vincent P. O'Hara.
"World War II had many superlatives, but none like Operation Torch - a series of simultaneous amphibious landings, audacious commando and paratroop assaults, and the Atlantic's biggest naval battle, fought across a two thousand mile span of coastline in French North Africa. The risk was enormous, the scale breathtaking, the preparations rushed, the training inadequate, and the ramifications profound. Torch was the first combined Allied offensive and key to how the Second World War unfolded politically and militarily. Nonetheless, historians have treated the subject lightly, perhaps because of its many ambiguities. As a surprise invasion of a neutral nation, it recalled German attacks against countries like Belgium, Norway, and Yugoslavia. The operation's rationale was to aid Russia but did not do this. It was supposed to get Americans troops into the fight against Germany but did so only because it failed to achieve its short-term military goals. There is still debate whether Torch advanced the fight against the Axis, or was a wasteful dispersion of Allied strength and actually prolonged the war. Torch: North Africa and the Allied Path to Victory is a fresh look at this complex and controversial operation. The book covers the fierce Anglo-American dispute about the operation and charts how it fits into the evolution of amphibious warfare. It recounts the story of the fighting, focusing on the five landings (Port Lyautey, Fâedala, and Safi in Morocco, and Oran and Algiers in Algeria) and includes air and ground actions from the initial assault to the repulse of Allied forces on the outskirts of Tunis. Torch also considers the operation's context within the larger war and it incorporates the French perspective better than any English-language work on the subject. It shows how Torch brought France, as a power, back into the Allied camp; how it forced the English and the Americans to work together as true coalitions partners and forge a coherent amphibious doctrine. These skills were then applied to subsequent operations in the Mediterranean, in the English Channel, and in the Pacific. The story of how this was accomplished is the story of how the Allies brought their power to bear on the enemy's continental base and won World War II."--Provided by publisher.

On the map : why the world looks the way it does /by Simon Garfield.
"Maps fascinate us. They chart our understanding of the world and they log our progress, but above all they tell our stories. From the early sketches of philosophers and explorers through to Google Maps and beyond, Simon Garfield examines how maps both relate and realign our history. His compelling narratives range from the quest to create the perfect globe to the challenges of mapping Africa and Antarctica, from spellbinding treasure maps to the naming of America, from Ordnance Survery to Monopoly and Skyrim, and from rare map dealers to cartographic frauds. En route, there are 'pocket map' tales of dragons and undergrounds, a nineteenth century murder map, research on the different ways that men and women approach a map, and an explanation of the curious long-term cartographic role played by animals."--Provided by the publisher
