Underwater studies of fish with an eel
This is a watercolour drawing done by William Lionel Wyllie. It depicts a group of fish and an eel underwater. The whole sketch has a background of think bands of colour made up of green, yellow, grey and dark blue tones to indicate that the fish are swimming through water. Only some fish are rendered in detail to indicate that they are closer to the viewer. Other fish are merely depicted as dark shapes to show that they are further away and have been obscured by the water. Fish bare shown from every angle including side and face on. An eel is depicted in the top right hand corner and has been rendered using a thick grey brown line. The bottom of the image has a white background, potentially indicating the sea bed. Several fish appear to be sitting on the sea bed. Study for Wyllie's oil painting 'Davy Jones's Locker', completed in 1890 (Museum no. ZBA5055).
