Lord Rodney

A circular bust-length portrait of George Bridges Rodney (bap. 1718, d. 1792) in flag officer’s undress uniform, 1748–67, wearing a hat and facing to right. The portrait has a thick frame and is mounted on a fictive plinth, inscribed with the title: ‘Lord Rodney.’ Lettered beneath the image with the publication details, ‘Published 8 Decr. 1785, by John Fielding, Pater Noster Row.’ This print was published by John Fielding as an illustration in John Andrews’s ‘History of the War with America, Franca, Spain, and Holland, commencing in 1775 and ending in 1783’ (1785–6), volume 4 (opposite p. 277). The portrait is based on Hugh Barron’s portrait, which was engraved and published by Valentine Green in June 1780 (see PAG9392). (Updated May 2019.)
