The notebook contains scientific calculations using the Mercer chronometer 5229 during the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition 1914 - 191917, led by Ernest Shackleton. Reginald James was a physicist on the expedition making scientific observations which would have been based on using the Mercer chronometer 5229. The book begins with magnetic calculations in South Georgia, November 1914 and ends with descriptions of aurora australis in May 1915.
