Visit of William the Fourth when Duke of Clarence, as Lord High Admiral, to Portsmouth In the year 1827, with Views of the Russian Squadron, by Henry Moses
Print. A set of images by the London marine artist Henry Moses (c. 1782-1870), best known for his 1820s series, 'Sketches of Shipping', covering dock scenes on the Thames. This is the title plate which appears to show HMS 'Victory' flying the Royal Standard at the fore and othe flags appropriate to the presence of the Duke of Clarence on board, off Portsmouth (where she was permanent guard and flagship by this time). It appears to be a later gathering of images of which the plates in fact have different dates and are not all solely related to the Russian squadron's presence in 1827. Some bear obvious plate numbers up to 13 and the order of others remains to be clarified.
The set also appears from the MS signature added here to have belonged to Thomas Grieve (1799-1882) one of a well-known family of London theatrical scene-painters: he may have bought it to use as a source for that purpose, since contemporary events were often woven into the visual attractions of stage Christmas and Easter spectacles in particular.
