Fish drying facilities on the north side of the harbour at Hammerfest, Norway.
Fish drying facilities on the north side of the harbour at Hammerfest, Norway. The photographer is looking south-west from inland of the north shore of the harbour showing a large number of timber racks on which split fish are hanging up to dry. The dried fish are called clip. The racks are scattered amongst wooden buildings and on a long wooden piled jetty jutting into the harbour. In the background and mostly hidden by buildings is the anchored Swedish passenger cruise ship Kungsholm (1928) in all white livery. The town of Hammerfest was totally destroyed by German forces in early 1945 and none of the piers or buildings in this photograph survived.
