The town and anchorage at Hammerfest, Norway.
The town, harbour and anchorage at Hammerfest, Norway. The photographer is looking west from the north end of the Sadlen showing the harbour and main town. St Michael's Church is in the foreground and a coastal passenger/cargo steamer is on the right. A number of motor fishing vessels and other craft are moored in the harbour and two of the warehouses fronting the harbour are occupied by Feddersen & Nissen. The building near the passenger landing steps on the right has Nissen Bunkers Salt on it. The Parish Church is in the centre. All of the buildings are of wooden construction. The town of Hammerfest was totally destroyed by German forces in early 1945 and none of the buildings in this photograph survived. At anchor in the distance and seen from just abaft her port beam is the Swedish passenger cruise ship Kungsholm (1928) seen from abaft her port beam. The island of Sörö is in the background.
