Ships Cover for Orlando class armoured cruisers.
Ships Cover for the Orlando class armoured cruisers HMS Aurora (1887), HMS Australia (1886), HMS Galatea (1887), HMS Immortalité (1887), HMS Narcissus (1886), HMS Orlando (1886) and HMS Undaunted (1886). The documentation mainly relates to statements of dimensions and weights [initially comparing the new type with both Arethusa and Mersey], stability calculations, a detailed design statement and discussion dated November 1884, correspondence concerning tenders from building firms, scheme of complement, trial reports, arrangement of armament, ammunition allowance, fittings and published particulars of the class as of May 1888. Further papers include details of work done to correct friction problems with the steering gear [circa December 1885] and alterations made to the vessels both during the design stages and post-completion. The papers commence in November 1882 with the start of the design phase and ends in March 1908, when the last of the class had been sold out of service. The last item in Cover 101A is a brief document concerning a proposal to increase ventilation to the engine and boiler spaces of the Orlando class armoured cruisers, evidently a mistaken filing intended for this Cover.
