The town of Saint-James, Martinique. The photographer is on board the Swedish passenger cruise ship Gripsholm (1925) which is at anchor off the coast. He is looking forward from the starboard side of the promenade deck showing a number of the ship's crew on the forecastle, which has awning bars rigged over it. A landing pier is on the right and on the hill above the town is a large sign reading St. James.
