The black spaniel 'Phyllis" sitting on an upturned wooden barrel on the deck of the armoured cruiser HMS Cornwall (1902). The dog is wearing a sailor's cat with the tally band 'HMS CORNWALL' and has a pipe in its mouth.

John R. P. Thompson was a cadet on board HMS Cornwall from around July 1909 until January 1910 when he joined HMS Hibernia as a midshipman.
