A Studio photograph of a black dog called 'Reff' sitting on a wooden bench looking slightly to the left (viewer's right). Next to this photograph is 'The Times' article dated 3 February 1917 mentioned in the caption to the photograph [Album reference ALB0382.E1].

The photograph is captioned above: 'This dog had the distinction of being mentioned in an article in the "Times" on "War Dogs". 1917.' It also has the caption below: '"Reff". Taken from German native at CAMPO, South Cameroon after capture of the Colony, 1916. Brought home in S.S. "Kenilworth Castle" Aug. 1916. / Killed by a motor Car at Bath when living with E. P. T., 1920'

John R. P. Thompson was appointed a Sub-Lieutenant to the second class cruiser HMS Astrea (1895) from 8 October 1913 and left in June 1916. He was promoted Lieutenant 15 April 1915. Astrea was on commission off the African coast and in May 1915 was the senior naval officer's assigned ship to lead the invasion of German-run Cameroon.
